So I made a new avatar for the group! The old one starred Linux-tan, so I decided to mix things up a bit and use NetBSD-tan for this one. (A switch from Linux to NetBSD? Now I know exactly how those people at Super Dimension Fortress feel. )

Anyway, we used to only accept art submissions as Faves, but now that we have our group account feel free to submit your OS-tan art to the gallery! Come on people, we gotta fatten up our gallery! :D

DeviantOS-tans has finally become a real dA group! Unfortunately, the club members who had been watching our club are not considered members of the group. You will have to rejoin, using the "join group" button at the top of our main page. THEN, you will receive updates and be able to submit art!

So, dA will convert any club to a group for FREE before March, 2010. A dA group is an actual club system, and a few examples can be found here:

anime-manga-artists.deviantart…
black-white-club.deviantart.co…

Anyway, what do you, the members, think about converting DeviantOS-tans into a real group/club?  It's an action that cannot be undone and it seems a bit rough around the edges... but it IS a beta feature and will become more refined in the future. Please comment.

OS-tans Recognized by Wierd Magazine

Breaking News! OS-tans have been recognized by Wierd magazine as one of the Lamest Tech Mascots Ever.

They place among other (and actual) mascots like Glenda the plan 9 bunny,

and Tux, the ubiquitous Linux penguin

While some of the mascots featured are truly terrible (like MS Office's Clippy and  Duke, the Java blob) we know the OS-tans, Tux, Glenda and company are far from lame-- and any publicity is good publicity.

They end their report on OS-tans with a verdict of "strangely compelling", which I find to me a major complement (arguably the best of the group!)

:D

Last journal I asked, "what what your first computer/OS?" Now it's my turn.

:iconbellacielo: ~ My first computer was a Compaq Presario desktop, bought in 1999, running Windows 98. It had a 350 MHz AMD processor, a 4 GB HD and 64 MB of RAM. It was the first computer my family had ever bought and the first I ever used-- and you better believe that setting it up and using it for the first time was full of drama.

It was our main computer until 2004, and in 2007, I fixed it up and got it running Puppy Linux. :D

Just another membership update; I figured, while we were at it, I'd post a question (I'll probably be doing something like this for all these update journals).

What was your first computer experience? What was the first OS you used?

I'll post my answer next journal. ^^
