Breaking News! OS-tans have been recognized by Wierd magazine as one of the Lamest Tech Mascots Ever.

They place among other (and actual) mascots like Glenda the plan 9 bunny,

and Tux, the ubiquitous Linux penguin

While some of the mascots featured are truly terrible (like MS Office's Clippy and  Duke, the Java blob) we know the OS-tans, Tux, Glenda and company are far from lame-- and any publicity is good publicity.

They end their report on OS-tans with a verdict of "strangely compelling", which I find to me a major complement (arguably the best of the group!)

:D

Last journal I asked, "what what your first computer/OS?" Now it's my turn.

:iconbellacielo: ~ My first computer was a Compaq Presario desktop, bought in 1999, running Windows 98. It had a 350 MHz AMD processor, a 4 GB HD and 64 MB of RAM. It was the first computer my family had ever bought and the first I ever used-- and you better believe that setting it up and using it for the first time was full of drama.

It was our main computer until 2004, and in 2007, I fixed it up and got it running Puppy Linux. :D

I know, right? They mixed the cool ones in with the lame ones, it's not fair.

Well kind of typical of the rather sensational Wired, they take very outdated OS-tan references and gloss over them. Hehe, it's a wonder why I never read magazines anymore... just your journal entries alone are better written and researched. -.-

fufu! and I didn't realize THAT was your first computer, I always just kinda assumed it was an old one you had lying around. ^__^'

I know, right? But I can't help but be surprised that our subsubculture has finally been recognized by a Western publication (even if it wasn't in the most flattering of articles) ^^;

And yep, 'twas our first computer... my family had been holding out on buying one until they became more affordable. ^^ I had never really taken notice of or cared about computers before we bought it, and similarly, none of my family had much experience with computers-- so it was BEDLAM when we first set it up. Dx

(I feel a bit sad for never naming/personifying the old Compaq... I should get to that in short order. lol).

I agree that Tux, Glenda, and the OS-tans are awesome! Ugh... Clippy was annoying, and the MS BOB mascots were pretty lame.

Hmm.. I knew that you had a lot of trouble with Windows 98 and were really glad to upgrade, but I didn't know that was your first OS! Talk about bad first impressions with computers! o_o

My first computer was a Macintosh Quadra 630 (circa 1994), running System 7.5. I don't know what its hard drive size or RAM was, but it was had a 33 MHz Motorola 68040 processor.

For me, tech nostalgia is bittersweet, as System 7.5 gave me a lot of trouble, and is still the worst Mac OS I've used in terms of user experience, yet I have fond memories playing games on it.

Most MS mascots are lame... remember Vista-Lego-ninja dude? xD

98 was really sucky... it was okay at first, but 9x Windows just weren't very hardy. I probably treated it pretty badly, too, being a technologically-dumb kid and all... :(

That sounds like a pretty cool first computer... Did you begin using it in 94, or was it a hand-me-down from your parents?

My first computer was new at the time when I started using it. I became Mac-savvy at a very young age, although it wasn't until years later when I really became interested in computers.

Oh, I remember the Vista Lego-ripoff guy! That whole series is laughably bad! I also think it's unfair that the OS-tans were considered lame mascots, when the picture used wasn't very representative, and they didn't go very in-depth about them. Really doesn't do the OS-tans any justice there.
